When it comes to cooking in your static caravan or holiday lodge, the choice of oven can make a big difference to your experience in the kitchen, with some owners debating whether a gas or an electric oven might be best suited to their needs.
Many static caravans and lodges come fitted with gas ovens as standard, which are often powered by bottled gas, or a piped gas supply via an on-site gas storage tank.
However, some owners aren’t fans of gas ovens in their static caravan, with complaints about uneven heat distribution and longer cooking times. And if you’re running low on gas during a busy cooking session, that can be a recipe for disaster! Although they can be cheaper to run than an electric oven, gas ovens are also less likely to be affected by a power cut.
In our new community poll, we’d like to know if you have a gas or an electric oven in your static caravan, and if you’re happy with it.
Over to you…
We’d love to know what you think about gas or electric ovens in your holiday caravan! Have you got a standard gas oven in your static caravan or lodge, or have you upgraded to an electric one? Or maybe you use a holiday caravan cooker alternative like an air fryer. Share your views and experiences with us in the comments section below.
Happy cooking! We’ll report back the results in March 2025.
We use a gas cooker attached to gas tanks but are considering an air fryer assuming the electric load is not too much. We need to check that out first
Gas oven is hopeless, if anything cooks at all it takes 4 times as long or maybe just burns. Never use it. Thinking about replacing for electric but then it’s easier just to eat out or microwave
Gas does cut out now and again, thinking of buying an air fryer for our caravan we also use slow cooker
We have gas in the caravan and I prefer that as it’s what I’m used to at home.
more than satisfied with my gas cooker, so far, so good, no problems or issues.
I tend not to use my gas oven that often, although it’s ok when I do. I have a microwave, an air fryer and a slow cooker, so I have a few alternatives. I’d probably prefer an electric oven, although electricity prices at our site are quite high and that accompanied by the price of a replacement would put me off.
Haven’t used it yet. Only used the gas rings of the cooker
We use an Air Fryer when ever possible.
Bought new static in 2022. Gas oven, takes longer to cook usually double house one. Too early to remove and replace as yet.
Prefer gas hobs with electric oven.
Find that gas grill is almost completely useless.
We have both a gas hob and make use of an air fryer.
Gas is more to our liking due to it being instant heat!
Have only ever had a gas oven, so am not able to make a comparison. The fitted gas oven has always been satisfactory and is checked annually, so I have no issue with it.
Hoping to use a air fryer this coming season
As using at home we have found it is easier . Quicker and probably cheaper. And also possibly a more varied menu

As new when purchased so oven pristine condition
The temperature is far too hot even on a low setting so pastry, etc is always burnt.
Quote to replace by site owners is prohibitive so
just purchased air fryer for use as alternative
Have standard lpg oven that is slow and unpridictable in use. Mainly use Dualit mini oven which uses less than 10amps so does not trip supply and is great for most things.
Would prefer electric any day. Far more efficient & safe
Why don’t cookers have a fold down lid on the hob? A cheap, easy way of providing a little extra worktop space.
Full size gas oven in our static.
I enjoy cooking with gas as you have more control over the heat levels.
We mainly eat out, and rarely use gas oven
Electric appliances which use more than one kilowatt are not allowed on our site. So all caravans have gas cookers with burners and an oven. They run on bottled gas. My microwave oven is compliant with site rules, so I have that too. And a pop up toaster and electric kettle. The site is not open for occupancy the year round, only between the end of March and the end of October.
We don’t like cooking with gas so use an air fryer and microwave 99% of yhe time.
Happy with gas oven but use the airfryer 90% of the time.as the 47kg gas bottle is now very expensive @£119 !!!
I dislike my gas oven very much. It is just as mentioned above. It cooks very unevenly, ie scorches the tops of pies, but does not heat through. I have to anticipate longer cooking times. I don’t worry about running out of gas because I am forever checking the level of gas in bottles. I was so convinced that the oven thermostat wasn’t working, that I arranged for my gas engineer to check it. He confirmed that it was working normally. I would love to change to electric. However, I am surprised to learn that a gas oven is cheaper to run than an electric one.
Caravan oven is far better than my oven at home cooks everything brilliantly
We’ve the standard high level built in gas oven / seperate gas grill. Also a 5 ring gas holb.
I’d much prefer an all electric set up, especially the hob…can’t beat an induction hob…wins hands down every time!
Occassionally use a slow cooker / air fryer.
We have an oldish caravan, no central heating, a gas fire in the lounge/kitchen and electric wall heaters in the bedrooms.
Were lucky on our holiday park the gas is piped and not a gas bottle. The oven cooks evenly and cooking time are accurate when using a recipe. Really great for pizza .
no problems with gas oven.
After a long career as a chef l would choose gas every time. It’s far more controllable.
We have a double drawer air fryer, oven is hardly ever on
I prefer gas, on our site we are on a piped gas system so pressures are constant. Gas is more familiar as we have a gas oven at home.
We love the cooker (gas) as we like fresh food ie veg use a slow cooker to.
We have a gas oven but I don’t feel confident using it as it is so unfamiliar from our electric oven at home. We have an air fryer in ours which we use more. Although to be honest we always treat a trip to our caravan as a holiday so we tend to eat out 🙂
We very rarely use our gas oven, preferring to cook in our air fryer. The few times we have used the oven, we found it extremely slow to reach temperature and cook times were greatly increased,
I have gas oven in holiday home we have had for just over a year this season we are going to change oven to an electric oven fir all the reasons you have stated in your opening statement
We can only use a gas oven, the electric supply is not able to cope with an electric oven
I would prefer electric, I would feel safer
We’ve always cooked on gas so are very glad we have gas in our static. We’re also fortunate that ours is piped. We hate electric hobs. They are so slow to react whereas gas is instant and provides better control of our cooking,
We have a gas oven but with the price of gas bottles being so expensive (£107) we tend to use our air fryer as much as possible.
Changing to air fryer!
We seldom use the built in oven & hob. The oven is difficult to set at a constant temperature and the gas hob is a waste of a lot of worktop space as we could easily manage with only 2 burners rather than 4. We use an air fryer for most things. Also a slow cooker which is great for casseroles and is cheap to run.
Electric oven and a gas hob is the ideal set up
I have a gas cooker and a gas boiler and wouldn’t change either it is instant on and off unlike electric.
Gas is fine.maybe ot as efficient as my electric oven at home.
We have a gas oven and I hate it the oven only has one shelf as well so you are limited to what you can cook.
We tend to use the air fryer more.
Would rather have electric oven but still with gas hob.
Prefer to cook with electric oven
Our static does have a gas cooker, but we also have a small simple air fryer for most of our requirements and hardly use the gas oven now.
Hi, we’ve had our static 20 years now, it’s still in excellent condition, and we still have our original gas oven and hob. The oven is hopeless though, we used to have to turn it on at least 30 minutes before we needed it and allow at least double the cooking time. Thank goodness for ninja, we got a large ninja dual at home, and then got a 2nd one for the cvan and have never looked back, now we can have a full Sunday roast with all the trimmings cooked perfectly in less than an hour. If we ever replace the cvan kitchen, we would definitely not have a oven incorporated into the replacement just space for a hob and a ninja
Gas ovens are slow and cook unevenly. It looks dated too. I bought an air frier and use this all the time instead.
We use an air fryer.
Hate the gas oven in our static. Very uneven heat and temperature control. Also miss the induction hob we have at home and are considering the alternatives.
We have a gas cooker but would prefer to have had an electric cooker. Electric is so much cleaner!
I use an Airfryer when possible.
We have bottled gas and have always had problems with oven not heating even tho been serviced every year and parts changed have given up and use air fryer.
Very expensive to cook with and simmer setting on gas hob worse than useless on bottle gas
We have a gas oven hob and grill. We are more used to electric but are using an Air Fryer now which is great. The grill is also problematic so we choose not to use it.
I have a gas oven that uses the bottle gas and it is useless. Heat distribution is bad, too far back and you burn the food and it takes an age to cook anything properly. We use an air fryer which is brilliant for most foods.
Our van came with a built in gas oven and grill.
We have started using an air fryer as the gas oven is not to good, it is also old (2008 van).
We are looking into replacing oven with an electric one as we are used to electric and most modern vans have electric ovens.
