Cooking in a static caravan can sometimes be a bit different to home cooking, with things like space and appliance limitations having an impact.
In last month’s community poll, we asked owners if they have a gas or an electric oven in their static caravan?
Static caravan oven poll results
We received a fantastic response from static caravan owners, with more than 700 voters sharing their oven types. The humble gas oven topped the poll with 94% of respondents having one fitted to their caravan. The remaining six percent told us they had an electric oven.
This poll sparked some great discussion among static caravan owners about their cooking preferences! While 94% have a gas oven, many shared frustrations about slow cooking times, uneven heat, or reliability issues.
A big trend emerging from the comments is the rise of air fryers as an alternative with many owners using them more often than their gas ovens due to efficiency and ease of use. Some also favour slow cookers and microwaves, while a few said they wished they had an electric oven instead.
Your static caravan oven comments
Many static caravan owners rely on the built-in gas oven, but some find them less than ideal. A common complaint was that gas ovens can cook slowly or unevenly:
“My gas oven takes ages to cook anything! I’ve learned to turn everything halfway through to get an even bake,” said Julie M.
“The heat distribution isn’t great. I have to adjust my cooking times compared to when I’m at home,” added Dave R.
But Sarah B others praised the reliability of gas ovens: “I prefer my gas oven as I don’t have to worry about power cuts or high electricity costs.”
The rise of air fryers
Many voters said they use an air fyer more than their gas oven:
“Since getting an air fryer, my gas oven is gathering dust!” said Paul L. “It’s so much quicker and doesn’t heat up the whole caravan in summer.”
“Air fryers are a game-changer. No waiting for preheating, and they cook food so much faster,” added Emma J.
For those who have limited worktop space, an air fryer might not always be practical, but the convenience and energy efficiency make them an attractive cooker alternative.
While only six percent of respondents said they had an electric oven, those who did were pleased with their performance. Some static caravan owners said they would prefer an electric oven if they had the choice:
“I’ve got an electric oven in mine, and I wouldn’t go back to gas. More even cooking and no running out of gas halfway through making dinner!” commented Mark T.
Other popular static caravan cooker alternatives
A small percentage of respondents mentioned using slow cookers and microwaves, particularly for convenience.
Carol H told us that she loves her slow cooker for making stews and curries while they’re out for the day and Steve G said a microwave was essential for quick meals, especially when he doesn’t want to spend ages cooking!

The way forward is air fryers cheaper quicker and cooks evenly
If you have an electric heated van and only 6kw available, then cooking by electric is difficult, especially in the Winter when you have a couple of 2kw heaters the kettle can trip the power let alone an electric cooking device.
