Jointly owning a holiday caravan with family or friends can help to spread the costs, so last month we asked static caravanners if they would consider it.
After hundreds of votes, joint holiday caravan ownership got a bit of a thumbs down from static caravanners! More than 60 percent of those who voted said they wouldn’t consider jointly owning a holiday caravan with family or friends.
However 18 percent said yes to joint holiday caravan ownership and nine percent said they might consider it.
Eleven percent of static caravanners told us they already do jointly own their holiday caravan.
Kevin French was one of those joint owners and what he says makes a lot of sense.
“Sharing a purchase presents some ongoing compromise, but the principal benefits are that purchase cost and annual site fees are shared; caravan usage is maximised; and I don’t need to undertake any maintenance alone!” he commented. “Plus, we have a brilliant location, no issues regarding airport or travel strikes, we can go on a whim….etc. Quite a good idea and a lucky find.”
Perhaps shared ownership could be a multi generational thing, a family unit sharing ownership with retired grandparents for instance could work well with the retired couple using the caravan during the working week and the young family making use of the ‘van on weekends and school holidays.
Paul Hodgkinson bought their static caravan – a 30 minute drive from home – during lockdown.
“Views over the sea, fantastic sunsets, plus the knowledge we do not have to scour the Internet for bargain holidays or cottages, or towing a caravan and so on,” he said. “It has been brilliant.”
What do you make of the joint holiday caravan ownership poll results? Let us know in the comments below.
I think the downside of shared ownership would be not being able to go there without consulting the other party. I like to be able to use my caravan whenever feel like it and once there don’t like to be tied to a date to leave. I leave my personal things e.g clothes, toiletries etc there, you couldn’t do that. It would be more like going on holiday rather than having a second home.
We all ready do this between family friends which is all good for now but mum is very poorly and could pass away at any time so we feel sad for her that shes not geting the benefit from the caravan an still paying her share and soon we may have to sell up as we wont be able to afford it or rent out not sure how to go about that as park says we only have one year on it only got it in 2020 nice caravan
Sorry to read about your mum being poorly Linda
