Compared to a 'bricks and mortar' house, holiday caravans are much more susceptible to damage by storm or flood. They are also more likely to be left unattended for long periods of time and as such can be even more at risk from a break-in attempt.
Static caravans are also extremely vulnerable to winter weather damage such as frozen and burst pipes resulting in escape of water claims.
To minimise this risk of frozen and burst pipes, when the caravan is not in use you should ensure you follow the winter weather precautions in your policy. For example, turn the water off at the mains and ensure all equipment is fully drained down (excluding sealed central heating systems containing antifreeze).
If you're not sure how to drain down, ask your park about professional drain down services which they may offer.
Of course even the most careful owners can sometimes come unstuck, and it's in these instances when the need for a specialist level of cover is never more apparent. Should the worst happen, you'll cover the cost for claims including storm damage, flood, weather damage, break-ins, fire and accidental damage.
We also cover static caravan holiday homes in Northern Ireland.
Things to look out for when choosing a static caravan insurance policy:
What is the average cost of static caravan insurance?
The cost to insure a caravan will vary from insurer to insurer and will depend on a number of factors, such as the make and model, the size and type of caravan, the value of the caravan and the park’s location. Therefore it’s wise to contact specialist insurance companies like Leisuredays to get quotes as the price can be tailored to your individual circumstances and needs.
Why do I need static caravan insurance?
Static caravan insurance is not a legal requirement. However, most holiday parks will ask you to have a basic level of cover in the form of public liability insurance. There are many reasons why it’s important to insure your static caravan and protect your investment. Specialist insurance will insure your static caravan against accidental damage, fire, theft, storm and flood and should include public liability cover.
Other benefits that are available with extensive insurance cover are debris removal and re-siting following damage, alternative accommodation, frozen and refrigerated food, replacement locks and cover for fatal accidents. Policies can be tailored to meet your personal needs with options for hiring out cover and extended personal possessions
What is static caravan new for old cover?
‘New for old’ cover means that we will replace your insured static caravan, lodge or chalet with the most recent new model (or equivalent) if it is damaged beyond economic repair. If you decided not to replace it, you would receive a cash settlement based upon the market value at the time of the incident.
To ensure ‘new for old’ cover applies, you must insure your holiday caravan and contents at the value it would cost to replace them with new (of equivalent specification), and not at the current value. You should review this value each year at renewal.
‘New for old’ cover is available on static caravans, holiday chalets and lodges up to 15 years old, unless your park has a block scheme insurance arrangement with us, in which case a different limit may have been agreed – please call us to check.
The alternative to ‘new for old’ cover is ‘market value’ cover.
What is static caravan market value cover?
‘Market value’ insurance covers you for all the same things as ‘new for old’, but in the event of your holiday caravan being damaged beyond repair (written off) we will pay out your holiday caravan’s current market value, instead of replacing it with a brand new model. If your insured contents are also damaged we will replace them in line with their current market value. If you decided not to replace them, you would receive a cash settlement based upon the market value at the time of the incident.
‘Market value’ is nearly always cheaper than ‘new for old’, so is a good option if you are looking to save money on your insurance premium.
‘Market value’ cover is available on static caravans, holiday lodges and chalets up to 25 years old (unless your park has a block scheme insurance arrangement with us, in which case a different limit may have been agreed – please call us to check). We may be able to renew existing customer policies which have reached and exceeded this limit subject to satisfactory claims history and circumstances.
